Macs hold their value...

... The OS does too. I just sold a copy of OS X 10.4 for £70 on ebay. It was acquired the day it was released (April 2005) for £69.99! Ignoring the selling fees I have thus made 1p profit.

Now, I wonder how much a very battered, but working, 867Mhz, 12", G4 Powerbook with a knackered battery, but that would come with 1.2Gig of RAM, 180Gig HD and Airport would fetch?

There's one born every day. I've seen several items sell for more on eBay than their retail price and it never ceases to amaze (or should that be amuse) me.

Aye I have just been watching a sale, where the wining bidder could have saved £50 by buying the item new off Amazon !

PS. I still have an old G3|DT mac in operation as a file server (and I have it ramped up from its original OS8.1 to OSX 10.4.11).

I recently upgraded my mobile. The old one was doing me fine so on receiving the new one I kept the box sealed and then sold it on ebay for the princely sum of £250. Given that I'd negotiated £5 off my monthly bill at the time I was upgrading I was quids in. Actually, the new contract was now costing me less money over the year than I got for selling a phone I didn't want.

I used to use an old G3 DT like that at one point. Years of 24/7 operation finally took their toll, though, and the power supply died. I then used a G4 tower and now I use a hackintosh.

Quite a bit I would expect. I often read of people on the Macrumors forum pleading with Apple to bring out another 12" macbook of some sort. You might even get £40 for the airport card alone.

That doesn't surprise me in the slightest. It's the old story of supply and demand. Tiger is no longer available in the Apple Store and reports on AD suggest that non-Apple retailers in the US with stock are charging way over the odds for it. For some with older machines who want to upgrade their OS Tiger may be the only option.
