I recently bought a MacBook Pro and wanted to copy the User Accounts, Applications, Settings and Files, etc from our old iMac G4 (running OS X 10.4.11) using Migration Assistant. I connected the two using a Firewire 400 to 800 cable & restarted the iMac in Taget Disk Mode which was immediately recognised by the MacBook. Having selected the User Accounts, etc to be transferred the transfer process started - or so I thought. After about 5 hours the following message appears:
'Transfer Error
An error has occurred that prevents the transfer process from continuing. Click Skip to continue through the setup process. To try again first check that all of the Firewire and power cables are properly connected and click Try Again.'
I have since tried a second time with the same result. I have a feeling that because I am trying to transfer from Power PC to Intel may well be an issue here. A call to Apple Support wasn't a lot of help other than to confirm the fact that they are aware of people experiencing problems migrating from Power PC to Intel.
Is there another way I can easily copy the User Accounts, settings and files? As a minimum I would like to copy Mailboxes, Address Book, iTunes library, iPhoto library, and Word/Excel files. I'm not too concerned about the Applications (such as MS Office) as I can install these direct on the MacBook Pro. I also wish to leave everyingthing intact on the iMac.
The iMac is backed up to an external hard drive. Would it make any difference if I connected this to the MacBook Pro for the purpose of copying everything over?
