It was a double reboot indeed

But it's done and dusted

Just performed the update.
I did the usual voodoo verified the disk and repaired permissions etc.
I switched off time machine and downloaded the update via software update.
The download went ok then it went to the time machine desktop and the installing files progress bar.
It stopped right away with an error could not update files due to an unknown error, with a restart button.
I restarted and I was back at 10.5.7, good recovery Apple.
I then downloaded the combo update 767mb I think and that installed ok.
I seen a dialogue "Updating bootcache files, installation will continue after completion, with an ok button"
The computer restarted a couple of times and it seems to be fine.
I'll update the list if there are any problems.

I think the failure of the first installation was it could not update the bootcache files but this is only a guess.

Got that on the MacBook, but not on the iMac... wonder what those files actually do?

Could also go some way to explaining why the first boot after an update is slower than subsequent ones here- the cache hit rate is probably diabolical

Might be due to how often you do a restart... my iMac normally only ever gets restarted after an update (last uptime was about a month iirc), the MacBook gets shut down most times I use it.

the MacBook rarely gets a restart though it has had 3 recently - one in London on 22 July , again on 30 July and again the evening of 30 July when I got back home . It only gets shut down if I leave home or if something odd is going on - like my Cable Modem/Router are playing up and I need to reboot them.

I suggest you both switch off to save energy.

You must have heard of "hibernate" or "suspend" mode for computers.

Lots of with trouble with this upgrade apparently. Playing havoc with some programmes and networks. I'm told the Apple site has loads of moans.

I haven't seen any issues ... except Safari has quit unceremoniously on me once or twice, but I was testing some Javascript under development.

My old problem of the video freezing when it comes out of display sleep with the screen saver active appears to be back

For once I'm not going to upgrade just yet... I think I'll see how things go, as it appears a fair few are having problems.

Currently my Mac works like perfection, so I won't upset the cart just yet.

Well - I had no problems and nor did MacFriar - and he beat me to the update.

I was actually making a serious point. Many, many people hardly ever reboot their computers, but it doesn't mean they are powered on all the time.

Mine is left on 24/7 and is only rebooted when an update requires it (However during the time it is not being used it is asleep).

And all my four updated without any problems.

I ended up doing the update and all seems well. Does anyone know when in September Snow Leopard will be released?

Rumour has it that it has gone Gold Master. If this is so, that means it is out for mass DVD production now, and could be ready for distribution in a couple of weeks. September 1st, anyone?

There's a fix for people affected by slow download speeds on their laptops after the 10.5.8 update.
