Whatever your opinion on the battery issue - 5.0.1 is worth having for the security fixes.

I loaded 5.0.1 into my 4S yesterday, though I never had the battery problem. It loses around 6% overnight and that is with WiFi and bluetooth turned on plus it's my wake up alarm for the morning.

BT -> Zen -> F2S -> Bulldog -> Be* -> BT Infinity

Why? It takes 15 mins to install, has a bunch of security patches and in my case noticeably improved battery performance. Not speaking Australian - or for that matter having a 4S - I can't vouch for the Siri fixes.

Why?

Because it is always wise to let early adopters discover any problems with a patch. A few are being reported in this case, not just a lack of a fix for battery problems, so it is sensible to wait a day or so for the reports to come in to see if they are likely to affect you. There will always be plenty of users who just must have the latest thing as soon as it comes out - let them discover any potential flaws.

This applies to patches to any operating system - Windows, OS X, iOS, Linux, whatever. Always let the impatient take any hit. It's basic computer management. If you've ever had to manage patches for hundreds of computers you'd soon understand why this is received wisdom.

It also applies to new hardware. Let the really impatient find out if the latest thing is the best thing since sliced bread or a lemon. What does it matter is someone else gets the latest gadet a day or two before you?

I have had no battery issues and am not seeing issues with the 5.0.1 update. I always install updates as soon as they become available. I see no sense in waiting.

Really? Complex software has issues?

Well blow me down with a feather. Who ever would have expected that and been able to include it in the decision making thinking.

I'll leave to to see if you can spot the great yawning chasm in your logic. Although, given that logic has never been your strong suit, I won't hold my breath.

Well I'm glad that you see my point, at least.

And you still feel that it is not sensible to wait just a day or two to see if those issues may affect your particular case? I for one would expect that to be included in the decision making process. That you would not speaks volumes for your understanding of logic.

The day that you can give me lessons in logic, Ian, is the day that I will leave these forums behind. Although, given that logic has never been your strong suit, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Apologies to others that a simple, well-intentioned bit of advice has been twisted into a series of personal attacks. But I'm afraid that I give as good as I get. I'll still be waiting a day or two before updating my iPad.

Enough said.

Well I'm glad that you see my point,
You didn't have a point.

You used ongoing concerns that don't change the basic circumstance to indulge in your trademark trolling of the Apple forums, something for which you have a truly epic level of form.

The day that you can give me lessons in logic, Ian, is the day that I will leave these forums behind.

Given the frequency in which you spew your fallacious, straw man-laden drivel across these forums, can I be the first to say that I will not miss your snide, snipey, disruptive, dishonest nonsense?

Bye.

Ian, a wise man has given you some advice. Perhaps you might just consider that it has come from such a lofty source and desist in pointing out the obvious.

I must apologise should anyone take this to be an anti-Apple remark. To me it's just good policy with any update.

You gain an insight into any problems and their solutions. If there are important issues that would apply to you, you may decide not to upgrade. It's not unknown for patches/upgrades to be withdrawn because of such problems, and then reissued.

I guess my caution probably stems from days managing patches on 500+ desktops. Each one was installed on a test PC and carfully tested before being released for installation on the mass of computers. With only one home computer, or other device, you can't do this. But you can let others do the testing for you.

Disagree by all means, but there is method in my madness.

This is very good advice, I'm not sure why it has brought out the inner-Troll in other people. Some people on this forum have always been cautious when loading new software (Goldie for instance), are we to constantly berate THEM for this?

This is the second time I have seen AEP attacked for giving the same advice. Anyone remember the iPhone 3G. I still have one as a spare, it crawls to a halt with IOS4 doing the simplest of things. IOS4 turned it into a slow piece of junk. I have never seen Apple correct this and provide me with a clear downgrade path to the last working version of ios3! Should this be my fault? No! Should I have waited for the reports to come in? No!! But did Apple correct this? No!!!

So where Apple iPhone/iPads updates are concerned I WILL be cautious because there may not be a clear downgrade path!

A word to the wise. I'm not being attacked for giving this advice. What I say has no connection with the attacks from these particular individuals.

Hence why I asked, and have seen a mixed bag of answers for 5.0.1 and the days of spending hours with software for no great benefit are something I try and avoid these days

Do the update on the iOS device directly; make sure the battery is charged 50% of higher, and/or you have mains. That way you get the delta, and my on 4S it took 15mins to update.

5.0.1 on the 4S is noticeably better at not using battery when the phone is "asleep" and passive. However when you're using it, it is a dual core device and does use battery. smile

My 4 chews battery if I use it a lot, often ditch netbook and survive with just phone.
Travel with a rechargeable battery pack, so if I get a lot of calls and am using GPS etc don't run out.

When an individual is known to be one of the only trolls on this forum and a consistent one at that, you may forgive people for pointing it out.
