Ian, a wise man has given you some advice. Perhaps you might just consider that it has come from such a lofty source and desist in pointing out the obvious.

I must apologise should anyone take this to be an anti-Apple remark. To me it's just good policy with any update.

But your policy has no logical sense. You gain nothing by waiting.

You gain an insight into any problems and their solutions. If there are important issues that would apply to you, you may decide not to upgrade. It's not unknown for patches/upgrades to be withdrawn because of such problems, and then reissued.

I guess my caution probably stems from days managing patches on 500+ desktops. Each one was installed on a test PC and carfully tested before being released for installation on the mass of computers. With only one home computer, or other device, you can't do this. But you can let others do the testing for you.

This is very good advice, I'm not sure why it has brought out the inner-Troll in other people. Some people on this forum have always been cautious when loading new software (Goldie for instance), are we to constantly berate THEM for this?

This is the second time I have seen AEP attacked for giving the same advice. Anyone remember the iPhone 3G. I still have one as a spare, it crawls to a halt with IOS4 doing the simplest of things. IOS4 turned it into a slow piece of junk. I have never seen Apple correct this and provide me with a clear downgrade path to the last working version of ios3! Should this be my fault? No! Should I have waited for the reports to come in? No!! But did Apple correct this? No!!!

So where Apple iPhone/iPads updates are concerned I WILL be cautious because there may not be a clear downgrade path!

Hence why I asked, and have seen a mixed bag of answers for 5.0.1 and the days of spending hours with software for no great benefit are something I try and avoid these days

Do the update on the iOS device directly; make sure the battery is charged 50% of higher, and/or you have mains. That way you get the delta, and my on 4S it took 15mins to update.

5.0.1 on the 4S is noticeably better at not using battery when the phone is "asleep" and passive. However when you're using it, it is a dual core device and does use battery.
