Mountain Lion

[link to this post]

I am sure we all know by now that OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is available to buy in the App store now.

Are you going to be an early adopter or are you going to wait ?
I have bought it and am downloading it as I write this but have not decided when I will install it.

I'm going to download it as I get a free copy.
I'll probably install it straight away as I've got other laptops I can use if it blows up wink

Done and dusted, found no problems yet, feels a bit faster than Lion. It could be a new install thing though. Nothing much to report tbh a few changes but not a lot.

I'm still on Snow Leopard and don't have any reason to change yet...

I have just updated my iMac to Mountain Lion and all seems to be ok so far. I have tried using Dictation but it is not quite there yet. Though it is supposed to learn your voice so it may improve. I am just about to upgrade my Macbook Pro.

Installed on my 2008 unibody Macbook. Seems to be stable thus far. Seems a bit nippier than its predecessor and anyone installing it might want to check software update immediately after (its now part of the App store application). It seems like a swathe of other stuff has been updated to be compatible. Also needed to update Air Display to keep using my iPad as a secondary screen and Trim Enabler to make Trim work on my SSD. I half expected it to baulk at the 8Gb of RAM I have iinstalled (the machine supposedly only supports 4GB), but it's perfectly happy. If anything untoward happens I'll let you all know.

I can't see anything on it that's going to be useful to me, and I am very cynical/bored of the term "faster and smarter"

I think one of the chief drivers for the switch to usual smaller updates was to remove the scope for killer bugs and thus encourage take-up (taking a lesson from iOS).

MS is sticking with the "Big Bang" approach. Will be interesting to see how they compare.

I bought it for my 24" iMac but I am waiting for the confirmation for my 2 week old Macbook Pro so I can get the free update.

Don't know how long that will be though.

Installed without any problems here. Safari seems a bit snappier but not much else to report.

Had my first Kernel Panic with 10.8 Mountain Lion. Had lots with 10.7.4 which resulted in a downgrade to 10.7.3. I'll see how the next few days pan out but I'm losing the spirit Apple at the mo.

Haven't had one for those for ages, not since Tiger.

I'd suspect a hardware issue, or something corrupt that isn't getting updated. Have you tried a completely clean install?

I vaguely recall kernel panics. Win2k pre-SP2 iirc. tongue

I thought the main driver was for Apple to keep on fleecing it's customer base with effective paid for updates.

Given I paid £45 for win7 2 qand a half years ago and won't be updating to 8 the MS approach looks a lot more cost effective.

£21 + £14 = £39 (Lion and M Lion prices)

Last time I looked £35 was still less than £45.

Now troll off.

Definitely get your machine checked out, check the RAM first then the hard drive, you should not be having these. I haven't had one since 10.2 or 10.3 and that was due to a torrent client.

And how much will the next "version" of the OS will cost, possibly more that the £6 difference.

Over the whole lifetime of Win7, the Apple model WILL cost more.

Bought it mainly for the airplay so that I could watch non iTunes material on Apple TV, but can't use it as my iMac is too old. It's less than 2 years old! Very disappointed.

Put your trollish goalpost back they they were.

Two upgrades compared with one Win7.

Then there's Win 8.

Now, you were told to troll off. Kindly oblige.

Tried the trial version of airparrot but found it stuttered; also it didn't work with audio only files (dts and flac).

Never had one of these on any apple product. I've used quite a few. Got a macbook pro ATM 2012 edition. Works like a dream.

I'm tipping it's a hardware issue as others have said. Best of luck!

It's working wonderfully here. It did download REALLY slow and took 5 hours to download. It was nowhere near to maxxing out my connection. Not noticed anything extra special but I prefer the way updates work now & the way safari works. Wifi seems a little better too.
