Hi all
I have just started using a MacBook Pro and would have liked to use Outlook as my email client but at nearly £90 for a stand alone version I will give it a miss. What would you recommend as an email client for Mac? I have heard Thunderbird mentioned. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank You

The mail application that comes with works just fine for me .....

Me too.

Yep. Mail.app has (like any other app) its eccentricities, but gets the job done.
|
|
|
Another vote for Mail.app.
Unless you've got some specific requirement that it can't handle of course, but it works for all I want to do.
|
|
|
|
And another vote for Mail - which when combined and working seamlessly with the other Apple apps - Calendar and Contacts - does everything that I remember Outlook providing.

My vote is for office and outlook -see my PM please

interestingly enough, I recently set up email on a Mac to connect to an Exchange server. I tried using Outlook but it wouldn't fetch the folder list. Apple's Mail app worked flawlessly.
|
|
|
Buying Office just to get a mail client seems rather excessive. Everything that you need is provided free by Apple.

It works for me every time and I use Office 2016 with their Exchange e-mail
I have sorted the OP out with what he requires.

Why is that unfortunate? It's my private information - so dam right I did.

I assume it was either a referral to get office/outlook cheaper or a link to somewhere to download a dodgy copy.

Or one of my spare licence keys, but thanks for the pre judgement.
As I have had business premium on an annual basis since it was released, I don't do "dodgy copies"

Well sorry I can't see how it would anyway. I admit I did send him a link to my google drive with all the .dmg files to download - but they are the same he would get from the download link and still require a key to activate - so in my view, perfectly fine. I assigned a key so that he couldn't log in on my main details and see all my info - but if I had put it on the forum it would have probably been used by someone else as it's a 1 time use but can be used with the trial that anyone can download.

OK, so that is a 3rd option - wasn't judging just suggesting possible reasons you would want to hide it. Refusing to say that in the first place seems odd. So, it is one of your spare "business premium" licenses - so they are transferable to others that aren't part of your business then? I have the home premium one but that doesn't allow you to give licenses to people that don't live in the same home.

Fair enough, I apologise for mis judging your response.
I am not sure on that one - I had home for about 2 months and I did give a key to my friend but never had an issue - as long as you send them the exe/dmg which is downloaded from your install page there should be no issues with using the licence key.
On Business I can give others access with a shareable link, but only up to the 5 naturally. For all they know I could be giving a key to someone at another site the other side of the world.

That is a cool benefit of the business one then - and it seems about the same price as the home version as well. Might be something to consider when I come to renew - thanks for the heads up.

The business license is for you to use on 5 of your PCs. If you want to share with others, they will need their own product key.

Well, that maybe so but it works just fine. And while it continues to work just fine I will continue to help people out with the licence slots I don't need
Happy New Year

I think I pay £7.80 a month over the year - otherwise it's about £9.40 a month
And you are welcome

OK, I shan't go down that route then.
The home license covers 5 users in the same household, the business license covers 1 user with up to 5 devices. I am afraid you are breaking the license agreement with Microsoft by handing out your keys. You may believe you are 100% covered and legal but I am afraid you will find you are not and that despite paying the money you have no legal right to the software as you are giving your keys to others.
So, even though I wasn't saying in the first post that you were doing anything dodgy it appears the actual result is that you are - whether you think you are or not.
Essentially you may as well point people to illegal downloads of it as the license on those is just as valid as the license you are giving them for their use.
I dare say you won't be happy with this post and will believe I am having a go at you - I am not.

I had no idea that it was wrong. I just asked MS support on chat and the guy (Diego) said it was fine.
But I will head your caution. However what's the say they aren't borrowing the machine I own? Nothing says that machine has to be in my possession all the time. 2 of my machines are owned by me/the company and permanently with employees. Not sure if that counts?
Anyway - that's probably just splitting hairs, cheers again for making me aware.

OK, interesting response from MS chat support - maybe they don't mind then. I have a number of dealings with MS in the business world and they can sometimes be really good but sometimes really bad - and their licensing model is absolute hell to work out - I met one of their experts and she said she spends most days just learning about the changes that have been made to the licensing terms that day.
But, if MS say it is ok then carry on - I would personally keep a log of that chat though

Cheers for the reply.
I've got it by e-mail from someone there. And it's stored. I've had to store it offline because after migration from Gmail to them they lost all my e-mail and my backup .pst didn't work so I had to start again.
That will teach me! :/

I have never liked the way that the Mac Mail App works with GMail, particularly with the way it handles spam.
I'd recommend both Postbox and Airmail as alternatives.
Airmail is now significantly the cheaper of the two to purchase, but Postbox is now a lifetime licence.

Agreed. I use postbox as well it's really good. It's a shame it only integrates with Dropbox, One Drive and Box. But I found opening up a free Degoo.com account and then using the send files feature gets around it. Dropbox is too low storage and the others are just pants.

The OP mentioned Thunderbird but no-one else - shame, Thunderbird works very well and I have been using it for many, many years on both Linux and Macs. Very stable, very reliable, assorted add-ons (like browsers) and generally easy-to-use.
A friend of mine uses "Mutt" but really...

Postbox is heavily based on Thunderbird and is much nicer to use on a Mac.
It comes with a free 30-day trial period as well, so well worth a shot.
$40 to buy, but it is a lifetime license.

I also use Airmail 3 which I think is well worth the £7,99

Agreed. Another good option, although personally not a great fan of their screen presentation particularly with the way it displays the spam folder (It's either too small at the bottom of the screen or doesn't display an unread message count if you move it the main folders in favorites.)
Much better option than the Mac Mail app which doesn't play very nicely with the way that Gmail manages spam though.

Yup. I found it to be even worse when it came to Exchange. Gmail works fine
