Ok, I have realised that Macs will not write to NTFS drives, which is a bit of a pain. The drive in the dock is fine, I formatted that in APFS as it will be used permanently for the mac.
I presume the best format for external drives to make them work with Mac and windows and Linux if need be is Exfat.

I may be wrong, but I don’t believe that the newest version of Mac OS allows the “enable with terminal option”, though earlier versions did.

Most likely.. I used Paragon when I had to years ago, and since then haven't needed. One other approach is plug the NTFS disk into a router that runs Linux/NTFS-3g and share it over an SMB connection.

Or, as Adrian also has a PC, just use that as a file server. I’m not sure which NAS Adrian has, but many (Synology ?) support NTFS.

it is external drives I have the problem, not with the Nas, the Nas uses Ext4. My nas is a terramaster.
I have Mac fuse installed for some reason, but I have no idea what i do with it.

Yes, but many NASs, including some Terramaster ones, support external drives formatted with NTFS.

As does my ASUS router... (and I think my Synology NAS).

Mine does have I have one fixed to it as a back-up of a backup if you know what I mean, but getting to it is a pain in the neck as it is in the cupboard under the stairs. I have a smart plug connected top it, so I can turn it on and off when needed.
I have already done one of my drives, copied stuff over to another and then re-formated it, the next one is the 8TB one, that will be a pain
