Anyone updated to it yet? I am hanging on for a while, as I have heard of some problems with external hard drives using non-Apple file systems. Apart from the drive in the dock, all my external drives use Ex-fat. Not really anything in Sonoma that is of interest anyway.
I will update to it at some point, but not yet, maybe in a few months, like next year

Hi,
Well, I waited until OpenCorePatcher 1.0.0 came out yesterday, and updated my 2013 iMac (4GB Force GTX) to Sonoma.
Success, and I am extremely happy to report that the 'zig-zag' graphics artefacts that have plagued every OC Patched release since BigSur have now been fixed (on the GeForce GPU's). I will yell if there are any issues, but so far.... Perfection
I will however wait a bit (a week or two) before I take the plunge with my main (2018) Mac Mini for the same reasons of caution as you
Regards,
Steve

I always try an install on a separate partition before upgrading. I haven't upgraded to Ventura yet as it didn't play well with my Intel Mini.

Not really anything in Sonoma that is of interest anyway. Same here. At the moment I'm thinking that Sonoma might be one of those OS's that I skip, but we'll see.

I've updated a couple of machines, variously M1 and M2 based. All OK so far. Some bugs I had in previous Safari versions seems to have been zapped in Safari 17.0

Sure... Why not...
Nothing broke...
Like the new screen saver/ desktop...
I use my mac to do stuff not to just tinker with, so as nothing broke I'm happy.

In contrast to the names of earlier Mac OS's, I'd never even heard of Sonoma so I looked it up.
Going by its Wiki entry it seems to be a pleasant enough but unremarkable sort of place with nothing to particularly commend it or otherwise... I wonder if Apple are trying to tell us something

In contrast to the names of earlier Mac OS's, I'd never even heard of Sonoma so I looked it up. Not into California wine then Bill? Me neither, but I visited the San Fran area in 1999 and you can't miss the tours to both Sonoma or Nappa valleys.
macOS 14 as its also known follows on from Apple's change to being the iPhone/iPad company, where instead of 3 or 4 years between rather major releases of operating system, Apple ship an update every year with a new version.... its a bit silly these days. Even Microsoft doesn't pretend you need a new version every year.
I am still surprised that Apple requires a new OS (iPhone or mac) to get new browser and other built in apps like Mail. That now seems so backwards as both Google and Microsoft can update from the store at anytime.

Not really any more obscure than Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, or Ventura. Just another moderately well-known part of California. They probably all mean more to Californians.

Maybe I'm cynical, but as they don't undertake to maintain more than the current and last 2 OS's, it also means they don't have to provide updates to an OS for so long

Three generations and you are out has always been Apple's approach (having no intention of accruing the cruft that Windows has). The only exceptions have been during processor changes (I think after Panther, Rosetta stayed in place for 5 years, basically until Carbon was finally killed off in favour of Cocoa).

The only exceptions have been during processor changes (I think after Panther, Rosetta stayed in place for 5 years, basically until Carbon was finally killed off in favour of Cocoa). Yes, I know why they do it, and I don't have any particular problem with it. But it remains that if you push out a new OS every year instead of every 2 or 3 then you don't have to keep it up for so long.

Although there would be staffing implications of more frequent releases (swings, roundabouts etc).
I wonder of part of this is also driven by the discoveryd debacle, where MDNSResponder was so deeply embedded that trying to re-wirte from the ground up proved doomed to fail.
Somewhere in the back of my mind I am sure I read somewhere that there was a known bug in (pre-OSX) Chooser that was so deep in the code that it was considered not worth risking trying to fix it. Institutional Memory Fail!

I know them all from cultural references (plane, novel, Cannery Row and jazz festival, Lucinda Williams song, and wine). Ventura is the most obscure to me.

But it remains that if you push out a new OS every year instead of every 2 or 3 then you don't have to keep it up for so long. and it also forces third party software updates in many cases, and when these aren't free, it can be at considerable cost. Its pushing companies that use Macs into using Apple and Microsoft (365 subscription) exclusively, even things like Fusion are slowly going as the Intel models age out of corporate life.

i doubt I will skip it, but just wait for a while, I suppose since I have backed up the machine using time machine I am not losing anything by trying it, but it just don't offer anything apart from some gimmicks. Seems to be the norm for operating systems these days.

I don't use safari, I use firefox, I can't seem to get on with Safari, maybe I should try again, but I don't like that the tabs are above the URL input bar.

I do a bit of video editing, some DTP, photo editing, the files are stored on external hard drives, so if these bugs are as bad as what I have heard, then it will be no good if I can't get access to my drives.

Just updated to 14.1, having skipped 14.0 because I wasn't about to do an update in the middle of a time sensotove job.
Trouble free, except that I has to read add two file shares (from my Intel and still Ventura box) in a shortcut becuase ehtere seems to have been a subtle change in the underlying permission. Worked fine once I did that though. Also broke a very old scanner driver.
Seems to have brought Teh Snappeh.
Being able to drop widgets (including iOS) on the desktop is quite handy,

Can anyone running Sonoma confirm that you can add video files to the Apple TV app on Sonoma and play them on the Apple TV. I have a large number of dvd rips along with home movies in iTunes on my old Mac pro running high sierra. I use the computer app on appletv to play them.
|
|
|
You have to do it via the computer sharing thingy (the orange icon) rather than the TV app (black icon), with Media Sharing turned on in Settings.
Confused the heck out of me for a while
Or Plex works well.

Thanks. Yes that’s what I use with iTunes on the high sierra computer. I was mostly concerned with Mac side on Sonoma. I haven’t used a recent Mac and was wondering how home sharing worked on Sonoma since iTunes was removed.
I have used plex and it worked but I would prefer to use the Apple TV computers app.
