Printer?

[link to this post]

Maybe a bit of a knee jerk reaction but after Canon stopped updating driver software (although I can't see why OS15.1 would have changed anything??) I don't want to go with them again.

I am in the market for a new printer... small form factor (previous Pixma TS6050), scanner not necessary as I have a fast document scanner separately...

Any personal recommendations?

Just to clarify - i presume that means the v5.0 driver doesn't work, rather than is just not listed as compatible

FWIW For me, Canon's have been the least prone to clogging if left unused for a bit - so maybe go with whatever the current version of yours is.

Just looked it up in records... bought july 2017... for 107CHF so probably not the worst investment... but is weird that the latest version of the driver on Canon site says it is incompatible with OS15.1 when I try and load it... But I can connect to the printer via direct wifi and it prints from the MacBook even though I removed the driver from the Printer System settings dialog... just not via USB.

Ver.24.30.0.0 (Mac) is from Canon website

Sounds like you’ve done OK with it. Why not get another Canon if it was a decent printer and consumables costs didn’t scorch the earth?

I know, I was a bit miffed when the Support centre guy said basically you're screwed... but I can offer 20% discount on a new one...

Maybe I should have accepted, rather than saying that I would probably choose ANY other maker over Canon and 'flounced off' frown

Time will tell... smile

If the 20% off price looks good locally, maybe eat a bit of humble pie, call back, and bite their hand off 😂

(it’s been years since I worked in 🇨🇭- do they do Black Friday / Cyber Monday there these days?)

Not tested USB on my ip8750 - Wifi works OK, but is seeming to have trouble fetching supply data.

Sadly these things happen, you can't expect manufactures to keep supporting products indefinitely and most of these companies are the same.
A know someone who has a Lexmark, that now don't work on Windows 10 and yet it did. The printer is not supported any more, so they will have to buy a new one. I know people with HP printers that now don't work on new operating systems, and Epson for that matter.

I still like Canon inkjets and when I do go for another inkjet, I will be looking at Canon or Brother.

As for you, depends on what you want, If you are not going to print photos, then maybe look at a laser/LED printer, a bit more expensive, but cheaper to run and you can leave them for ages between uses.

i have a Brother HL3150CDW, fantastic printer, it is a LED printer, but the quality is superb, colour as well. They don't make my model any more, but this link is to the later model;

But if that is large, too expensive, then I would suggest getting another canon. If not, then try a brother inkjet, one will be on my shortlist along with Canon when I look for an inkjet. But an A3 one

For sure… but because the prices were high to start with the discounted prices at this time are ‘normal’ for other places! 🥴

The reason it will probably have broken in 15.1 is because there were some long standing but only recently found security vulnerabilities with CUPS (the open source print server used in macOS).

Fixing those some of those issues completely necessarily involved breaking some existing printer drivers in a way that typically doesn’t happen when you fix most security vulnerabilities. The way some of CUPS worked was fundamentally insecure, the some drivers would need updating after this fix.
