Portable External Drives

Being offered a new External Drive for the MacBook and am discovering it's not that easy now to get a Firewire one

Silly questions time

1) I'm Firewire 400 - can a FW 800 be used - this Western Digital http://www.amazon.co.uk/WESTERN-DIGITAL-Passport-FireWire-External/dp/B001NZY2KK/ref=sr_1_143?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230502882&sr=1-143

Is what I'm looking at and it does say in the Content section-<< FireWire 400 cable, >> I didn't realise that Firewire 800 ad FW 400 used the same cables - I thought the plugs were different.

2) Anyone able to reccommend any other makes that would let me use FW 400

3) anyone able to suggest places I can find a FW portable ?

According to this on the Western Digital site it contains a FW800 cable and a FW800 -> FW400 cable, so it looks as though it would work.

You are quite correct on the cables too, the connectors are different for 800 and 400.

That's cheered me up a bit - 'cos I have a Desktop 500GB Drive from Western which I do like so was reasonably keen to get a protable from them .

Job done - one 320GB ordered for me and one 500GB ordered for the PC lappy

I have one of the Western Digital 'My Book Pro' drives which I use with 'Time machine' for back up. Been running fine for over a year now.

Cases are easier to source, it's not hard to stick a SATA drive in one either. Or IDE (PATA).
