Accounts

[link to this post]

OK, this thread finally prodded me to decide that perhaps I should stop logging in as admin by default, and set up a standard account for everyday use.

Easy enough... but is there any quick way of "copying" the admin desktop over to the standard account to save setting it up from scratch again?

Login as Admin and then in finder copy the desktop folder form /users/[AdminAccount] to /users/[NewAccount]/desktop.

I think that should sort it. Can't be sure as mine is blank.

I looked at that folder, but all it seems to contain is the folders etc that I've got on the desktop (all one of them ).

I should have been clearer- what I really want to do is duplicate it completely- wallpaper, screen saver, dock layout... even better would be some way of keeping them in sync, but that may be asking a bit too much

At a bit of a guess - copy over the desired .pref files.

Sounds likely... unless I get a better idea from someone I'll leave it until I'm back home on the iMac, I've got Time Machine on that one

Bill - I'm afraid it requires use of the terminal , but this link should tell you what you need to do.

I don't think there's any way that you can keep two accounts synchronized. It's good practice, normally, to make the appearance of the root, or Administrator, account distinct from your normal user account. That way it's easier to remember when you are logged on with elevated privileges.

Thanks for the link, but for just one account I think I'll take a screen dump and do it the hard way

Good practice? What's that? I'm an engineer, don't forget- what is best is what works

In a multi-user or "work" environment I'd agree with you, but this is just for me at home... if I screw it up there's nobody but me to blame

Clearly you're not so absent-minded as I am.

Ugh that's not what Macs are for! Forget about complicating a lovely experience and go back to enjoying the full admin - additional accounts are not worth the extra disk space
