Sub-titles

[link to this post]

At the moment I'm using MacTheRipper to rip a DVD then Handbrake to convert it to .m4v for iTunes to import and thus make available to Apple TV...

Does anyone know of any way to do the same thing but with the audio subtitles on the DVD incorporated into the .m4v file?

I haven't tried it but there is an audio and subtitles tab. There is a drop down menu giving language options and a tick box marked 'forced subtitles only' whatever that does

Let me know how it goes - especially 'forced subtitles' I assume that means them being burnt-in?

Will do... I've got one on the boil now, but it takes about 3 hours to encode a DVD to m4v frown. I usually rip a few onto the HDD with MTR then let Handbrake process them overnight.

I'd guess that "forced subtitles" means the ones that come up when (eg) you've selected English as the language but a significant/relevant part of the dialogue is in another language. I've probably got a DVD with those on, but it'll be purely accidental if I come across it crazy.

Well, that worked a treat- a film with sub-titles smile

I used "Full Disc Extraction" with MTR, everything default on Handbrake except "English" on the sub-titles drop-down. ("Forced sub-titles only" left unticked.)

Thanks again smile

Yes m4v encoding is heavy work but handbrake does make best use of multicore CPUs, so it's probably the fastest free application to do the job.
