Smashed Macbook screen

[link to this post]

What is the best course of action if the screen on a MacBook has been "smashed"?

Mine hasn't, but a friend's MacBook screen has. I don't know how bad it is, but he's wondering what can be done.

Is the outer casing intact?

Look on ebay for replacement parts?

Buy a faulty macbook and switch the screen?

Use an external monitor all the time lol.

I broke a laptop screen a few years ago - heard a shout from my SO in the kitchen, put the laptop on the floor and leapt to her rescue, kicking the screen and breaking it in the process. My insurance policy paid out for the repair, done by a local Apple Auuthorised repair shop..

In order:

Cry.

Check insurance for accident cover.

If no insurance then kick yourself for being so stupid as to not have any.

If insurance has accident cover then call them and go make a nice cuppa.

If insurance has no accident cover then cry again and check what you have under the mattress.

If you have nothing but fluff under the mattress then start wondering how long you can live without food.

If there is £500 in cash under the mattress get an estimate in repairing the screen.

If there is £1000+ in cash under the mattress then go to Apple Store and buy a new Macbook.

Thanks Des, I've got a sneaky feeling there's going to be lots of tears when he finds out!

Look on http://www.ifixit.com/ for a take apart guide and assess the possibility of replacing the panel. Then buy LCD panel on eBay.

I did this for my MacBook, which I got for a good price with the broken LCD, and at the time spent around £170 for the replacement part.
