What is it worth?

[link to this post]

Can anyone tell me what you think my Mac is worth?

Details... 13 month old MacBook 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM, 250GB HD and Superdrive. The only defect is a crack in the plastic casing where the plastic has come away. It's on the edge of the case where the right hand rests to use the keyboard and is goes from the edge of the case to about 1mm in, and is about an 25mm long, so not very big but noticeable. It doesn't expose anything inside.

Mac2Sell say £640 but they don't take into account the crack.

I'm only considering selling so that I can raise funds for an iMac smile

Might be worth asking Apple (via a store, over the phone or a reseller) if they'll repair the plastic top casing free of charge. They have done in previous years.

It was a very common problem (it's happened to all 3 top cases that Apple provided for my MacBook)

I'd knock about £30 off because of that crack. If someone wanted to fix it they'd be looking at around £30 for a second hand replacement part or around £70 for a new one.

Apparently my Mac is worth 800 quid but I still have a year of the extended cover left. That's almost a new iMac.

You can get the crack repaired by Apple for free (it's a known issue), if you can wait - do that and sell for as much as you can.

I've been having a browse on Apple forums and an awful lot of people have the same complaint about the plastic cracking in the exact same spot. However, it seems to be very hit and miss as to whether Apple will replace it for free or whether they'll charge for it.

I have come across this article, which may provide some hope!

Fetler - I have had my top and bottom cases replaced without problems - the cracks have always been small and right at the edge , but very very annoying .

I suspect that they also take into consideration the state of the MacBook as well - the Genius has always seen how mine has been well protected - slip cover [ and incase one ] and then in either a laptop case or a back pack with a laptop compartment.

Just got back from the Apple Store at the Trafford Centre and they replaced the cracked part of the case, the keyboard and the trackpad - for free smile

Only took 30 minutes, too. It feels like I'm using a brand new MacBook smile smile

See what happens when you go about it ? laugh

I'm always moaned at 'cos I expect problems - I'm still concerned what happens if I get any more cracks after my Apple Care has expired - but till then I just check it very very carefully and at the first hint of a crack - in it goes.

Now just make sure you keep the paperwork as a 'just in case' insurance - but it's now logged with Apple so you have less to worry about.

Now that I have had my MacBook repaired, I'm going to start the motions of putting it on Ebay, but I have a few questions before I do...

I've had a look through the MacBook listings and the cheaper ones seem to have defects (discolouration, scratches, dents, etc) but none of them that are being bid on go anywhere near the figure that Mac2Sell gives for my MacBook. Is Mac2Sell accurate?

Also, if it is accurate, do I advertise the fact that Mac2Sell think it is worth £620 given its specification? (it has a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 250GB HD, 2GB RAM and a Superdrive)

Is £620 far too optimistic?
