2. They're cracked, pirated versions.

I definitely didn't know that jailbroken apps were pirated?

Not all applications are pirated, if any when it all began. In fact a huge amount of applications now available in the iTunes App Store started life off as an app for a Jailbroken phone. For example, Tap Tap was first available for free using the Installer.app shortly after Jailbreaking the iPhone/iPod Touch came about allowing you to install your own applications, it later became an official App Store application.

An unofficial SDK was hacked together allowing developers to write unofficial code for a Jailbroken iPhone.

The site linked originally was pretty much every app that is on iTunes, for free.
