Time Machine alternative

[link to this post]

Hi folks.

Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative to Apple's Time Capsule? Can I attach a network (Ethernet) drive to my O2 wireless box and use that, or will it not show up on the wireless network?

Thanks,

Supposedly you can use a normal network drive with Time Machine but I've never got it to work with my Buffalo LinkStation. A normal external drive plugged into the Mac is easiest (but not if you have several Macs). I've ended up using an iScsi drive exported from a Linux server. This works just fine.

If you have another Mac you can use that. To make any shared volumes on it available open a terminal window and paste the following line into it and hit return.

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

After you do this AFP shared drives will show up. That means that if your ethernet box supports AFP file sharing then it'll work too.
