iOS 4 and O2 APN settings

[link to this post]

In O2's notes for iOS 4 at Step 4, O2 are suggesting that the APN settings be changed to the Bosie suggested settings.

I'm not in the UK to try it out - is username "bypass" still working or have O2 removed image compression without tweaking?

O2 advise merely replacing "idata" with "mobile" and leaving everything else unchanged. I don't know how to check whether image compression is still being applied.

I've done that, but not noticed any difference.

I am confused by the O2 instructions. The title of the instruction page is:

Data Settings for Pay & Go, Pay Monthly & Business
(non iPhone tariff) customers
(my emphasis)

Does the "non iPhone tariff" reference mean the instructions don't apply to customers with iPhone contracts? Or is it some subtle issue for Business customers only?

Sounds like it is for any phone BUT the iPhone?

Don't know for sure though. '.'

I have an iPhone 3GS and my wife and daughter have 3G's. I've updated to iOS4 but have not updated the new O2 settings. So far I haven't noticed any problems on any of the phones. So, what are the new settings about? Anyone have any ideas?

The instructions only apply to customers who are not on an iphone specific deal.

Bosie, I haven't seen anything that suggests there is any image compression going on on my phone, at least.

Des, thanks sounds promising. Another sign of the proxy server is to check HSUPA (upload) speeds - i would expect around 1.5Mbps from O2 compared to c. 300kbps when the proxy interferes. Needs HSUPA to be enabled on the local mast of course, in London most of the West End has it.

Welcome to O2's world of ambiguity.

Try their form for moving your phone number. The third question is;

Your phone number: Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr? Is this the number I have with them, my existing number or my home number or contact number or...?

I eventually - after reading lots of blurb established that this was the number I wanted to move, but it could have been made so much easier if the question was 'The number you wish to move:'
