A friend has an iPad (original) and he is keen to print stuff on his Canon wireless printer. He has no other Apple kit and I know diddly-squit about Apple products. I know that the printer does not support ad hoc networks - it will only talk to access points. I have read that the iPad will only talk to AirPrint-enabled printers, whatever AirPrint is. If the Canon doesn't support AirPrint, is he stuffed?

What you need is AirPrintActivator.

On the other hand, I have just noticed that the person with the problem has no other Macs, so not really relevant.

FingerPrint, and there are others - but all require a computer is left on for the iPad to print via.
Synology diskstation NAS boxes can also turn any USB printer into an "AirPrint" compatible printer. Lets my iPhone 4S print to my 11 year old HP DeskJet.
