I prefer the new connector to both the old 30 pin jobbie and mini-sub, more stable and secure IMO!

I've never had any problems with mini-USB on a number of different devices. And the great thing is one cable fits all.

I would be very happy if all rechargeable devices used the same connector and the same power supply; saves having a box full of cables and PSUs for devices that probably died years ago.

I know - markup on cables is very good, one person was buying 7 when I picked up my mini USB one.

I like being able to dock my phone into a cradle. With the Galaxy Note, it was rather awkward, as was the 30 pin Apple connector, and the one on the Galaxy Tab which looks like the Apple one but is proprietory to Samsung.

Supposedly the chip is there to determine what the cable is being used for (data & power or just power). But, as was pointed out in the office, why doesn't the phone just do that?

There as a report on the web yesterday that (IIRC on Engadget) that a Chinese company has cracked the encryption and non-Apple versions would me forthcoming.

Edit: Autocorrect madness!!

That is the explanation that I have seen. But USB cables have no need for this, and why the need for encryption? The only logical explanation, to my mind, is an attempt to control the market, and hence the price.

I would hazard a guess that your conclusion is absolutely spot on.
