Re: Sonos and NAS system

I have used Synology Nas for about 5 years or so and found them Excellent
Standard units are always without drives --- ( to facilitate end user adaptability).
If you are just looking for an Nas to store your music for streaming, then I suggest a basic single bay unit and buy a HDD ( only you know the capacity you want) .
Installing the drive is a TOTAL DODDLE-- can you use a screwdriver? Then you can do it in 5 mins.
Setting up the drive is taken care of as soon as the unit "sees" the drive.
Be advised though that this can take upto 7 mins-----Just leave the Synology unit to finish its job ( it will tell you when its finished setting up)
Can I suggest you check prices at .
scan

Best Itunes server i've used .

Good luck

I have a Buffalo TeraStation connected to my router. My iTunes folder is located on the Buffalo where all of my music and films are stored. I can then stream music and films to either my iMac or to the TV through the Apple TV with the iMac switched on. My Sonos Play:5 and / or my Sonos Connect read the same music files directly from the Buffalo and therefore I can stream music even with the iMac switched off. My DVD player can also stream the films directly from the Buffalo, again with the iMac switched off. I also use the Buffalo as the storage for the iMac Time Machine backup. It all works seamlessly.

The only problem that I have is that I need to connect to the Buffalo from the iMac using Finder before I start iTunes after a reboot. Otherwise the iMac cannot find the iTunes folder on the iMac. However, as the iMac is on most of the time that is a small price to pay.

My son has a similar set-up but he has both his Apple and Windows laptops pointed to the same iTunes folder on his NAS and therefore they can both share the iTunes data. Of course this does mean that the music is not available on the laptop when you are not connected to your own network, but that is what an iPod is for.

Thanks guys for the information and i will check out what you say sometime Monday, think i have got myself confused as i thought i could just buy a bigger hardrive and point the Sonos in that direction.

Obviously if i do that i require a hard drive that has a connection for the router also.
