I needed to reinstall Java (for Eclipse) and VirtualBox to get them working, but otherwise everything seems to work so far. It's a bit slow because I'm running from an external USB drive but it looks good to transfer it to my hard disk (assuming SuperDuper works!).

I've updated to the latest Safari and iTunes, but I'll wait a bit before committing to Mavericks.

That's why I'm running it from a USB drive for the moment. I can revert with just a reboot, if necessary. I know how difficult Apple make it to downgrade when you have made changes!

I'm a tad concerned - not yet got Mavericks.

Some years ago I had Gmail downloading to my MacBook [ to sure if it was the MB or the MBP :( ] and it totally fouled things up - filled my hard drive in minutes flat. Went into Apple and after a while they were unable to really deal with it - so kept that for use on the Web.

Why am I worried now - NTL/Virgin uses the Gmail interface thingy so I hope it doesn't mess things up for me WHEN I decide to grab Mavericks. I'm used to MacMail and don't want to try something else.

That's a new one on me, and I don't believe it. I've never had any problems with GMail on OS X and I haven't noticed any with Mavericks. (Hotmail accounts are more of a problem with Mail telling me it can't log on.) As GMail is my main mail account this would be a show-stopper if true.
