Broken ipad

I have found an old ipad1, I connected it to my computer and a empty battery symbol appeared in the middle of the screen, but the Symbol was broken missing bits in two places. In itunes I get the message itunes has detected an ipad in recovery mode, I click restore and when it gets to the bit about preparing the ipad for restore it comes up with unknown error 1600, is there any hope of getting this working.

Thanks, i have tried that and still no go, even tried downloading earlier versions of iOS but i get the message," The iPad could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." will just use it as a door stop. the cost of taking it to an apple store would be uneconomical. As the nearest would be a boat ride to southampton.

What's that, 20 quid return?

by Catamaran yes, but not sure how far from the dock the apple store is, its £40 if you need to take the car.
