Search Scanned PDF

I have scores of magazine pages scanned into PDF files - usually one or two pages per file.
I would like to be able to search each file for some particular words.
Unfortunately Acrobat XI version 11.0.04 and Preview Version 6.0.1 (765.6) do not seem to be able to search PDF documents produced by scanning.

There do seem to be software packages to make PDF documents searchable - but only for WINDOWS.

Is there anything suitable for Apple Macs?

We have 3 macs, on OS 10.2.8, 10.3.9, 10.8.5 and could use any or all of them.

If you have Acrobat (not just Adobe Reader), you should have the "Recognize Text" feature, which will OCR the bitmaps and make them searchable. I don't believe this is a feature limited to Acrobat Pro, but I could be mistaken.

Unfortunately Apple chose to provide only Adobe Reader with a new MacBookPro at £1500.
I don't want to pay £131 for Acrobat, just yet.

I did download that but could not get it to work.
I will try again in 2014.


It may seem strange but when I bought my G4 iMac in 2002 or so it came supplied with an OCR application, free of charge - part of the Classic suite.
Apple seem to have perfected the art of selling less product for more cash.
Likewise that G4 package included a database app and a spreadsheet app in Appleworks - all for 'nothing added to purchase price'.

At last I have got round to trying to use this OCR web site, with our MBP, and am pleased to say that it works and is free!

I have also discovered that the Vuescan software also includes an OCR feature - you can get a free to use version.
