If it loads in another account it's likely an iTunes preference file is corrupted.

No help what-so-ever, but I'd upgraded i-tunes before I upgraded to Yosemite. All working fine here.

Is the i-tunes icon in the dock now red in colour ?

Yes it is in red. I will set up another account when I get home later.

and if there is any way you can work out how to edit an existing playlist now on the new fangled i-tunes, I'd be most happy to hear it

Most of my playlists are smart playlists. I can right click on them and edit them in the same way that I always could.

I also created a new play list which I can drag tracks to and delete highlighted tracks. You can then right click the playlist to edit it to drag additional tunes to it or delete tunes.

Does that not all work for you?

Yes there is. But you need to configure it in Settings (Secondary Click)
