I seem to have to press really hard to get Safari to change pages. Is this normal?

What, on the glass? Possibly needs cleaning.

It's a good idea to restart the iPad indeed any iOS device once in a while.
I think Safari in particular gobbles up lots of memory. Hold down the side button until you see a switch off slider, do the same to restart.
