Adrian - If you want to give macOS a try on M1 silicon, came across these guys offering a hosted M1 Mini running from their cloud.
https://www.scaleway.com/en/hello-m1/
https://www.scaleway.com/en/docs/faq/apple-silicon-m...
Identical to Amazon AWS, except their current rental price (minimum 24 hours) at €0.10 per hour is about 1/10 of what Amazon are charging and Amazon have only started doing M1 Mac cloud tin on an invite only basis. Amazon's regular Apple instances are based on Intel CPUs.
So this place works out at just over £2 for a 24 hour run. Much cheaper than Amazon, which will cost you £24 for the same...
Try and M1 Mac for 24 hours for less than a cup of coffee!
Cheers for that, I will have a look at that, maybe tomorrow or Thursday or sunday, sometime when I have sometime to have a good look.
sound very useful.
I am pretty sure i am going for a Mac but not until next year, depending on what happens in the next couple of months or so. I need to do some thinking about life and stuff.
thanks again

This video is a few months old, but is quite a good one from Patrick at STH (ServeTheHome). Not your typical Apple fanboy-0ish videos (you know the ones
https://youtu.be/4gXUfAgLKj0
He'e reviewing the version with the 10 GbE NIC in it, but raises a couple of interesting points along the way, which I though you may be interested to hear if you're thinking about getting one (M2 model??) next year.

cheers for that, but it looks like it concentrates on the network only, but i have not had a proper look, i am going to have a look at it in a bit on my Tv, while having a drink.

Yes the subject is all about how well the little mini handles the raw networking side of things. Impressively continuing full output on 10 Gbit (well 9.4 Gbps net data rate) whilst maxing out read/write via external Thunderbolt/USB, internal SSD and pushing graphics.
Just a shame Apple ridiculously over charge for additional RAM and SSD - clearly where the profit margin sits. The base config. / price (and even 10 GbE option) is standout bang for buck.

When choosing between MacBook Pro and Mac Mini, the answer to this would always depend on the factors that are more important to you.... Is it the performance or portability or price or features or ports and connectivity? Once you know, then it would be easier to choose which one would suit your needs and preference.

Portability is not what I need, I am not a fan of laptops to be honest, but I suppose being able to have that choice may be useful.
I was hoping that Apple would announce a m1 pro version of the Mac mini, i know the M1 mini is a pretty powerful machine, but if they are going to bring out a newer version then I may as well go for that.
To be honest, I still am not sure what I will go for, update this machine or go for a Mac, just want a change from Windows.

I was hoping that Apple would announce a m1 pro version of the Mac mini I'm sure they will fairly soon - and it will be a whole lot cheaper than the MacBook.
As an aside, I got my wife a MacBook Air (M1) for Christmas, and I'm very impressed with it. Might even treat myself to one (although I'm also keen to see what they announce about the Mini).

I am in no rush, I need to wait for a couple of months anyway as I am still deciding what I am going to do job wise.

Adrian the earliest in all probability (based on Apples historic media launch dates) will be late March next year.
If not then likely it will be October as iPhones typically are announced in September. June tends to be when they announce iPads. Not set in stone of course….especially with global pandemics and chip shortages in play…
