Mac update

[link to this post]

I don't like the way Mac update. you say ok download the update and update, but it downloads and then resets, not warning at all like in Windows. then the computer light will stay on for ages and a blank screen, I don't know if was doing anything or not. thankfully I was not working on anything when it reset.

This is the first major thing I don't like with the Mac.

When you get back to the login screen it is done. Most updates require a restart, some more than one. But Macs on-screen "mins remaining" were always a bit of a figment of the the imagination - the last minute can last anything up to 10 mins - so they don't really bother doing them. I also find the frequent absence of a progress (or at least activity) indicator annoying.

On my Intel box I would turn off the screensavers and unplug any ExtHDs, which sped things up a bit. The M2 just gets it done in a fraction of the time.

A full reinstall from recovery mode in your M2 Pro will take no more than 40 mins or so - add download time for a regular update and that is the time to wander off and make coffee and toast/ watch an episode of the sitcom of your choice. 20-25 mins is typical, but it will often say more at the start and way less at the end (so to speak).

I'd agree with that... I've sometimes suspected that it's a check that the random number generator is working crazy

It did not say anything, well I did not see anything, it downloaded the update and then reset, no warning.

Just glad i don't have automatic updates turned on.

If you had had any open, unsaved documents (or things like a Terminal window) open when it was ready to restart it would then have asked you to save before it restarted.

But if that is the only major annoyance after years on another platform, you're doing pretty well 😉

I'm not understanding: did you iniotiate the update? 'Cos of you didn't and it went ahead anyway, then you still have autoupdate on.

I’m pretty sure that it gives you a 60 second prompt that it is going to reboot, with a chance to cancel the reboot, if you have no files open. It will prompt you to close any open files. And it will only do this if you ask it to download and install the update.

I can’t quite remember what happens if you have automatic updates on, but I thought that even then it prompted before installing the update if it wasn’t out of hours.

But Mac OS does seem to take a lot longer than Windows to perform an upgrade.

That’s what it does on my iMac

I started the update, but I did not get any notice that the computer reset

The Mac will log you out almost immediately to install the update then reboot.

Blink and you miss it.
