They have done it again

I just updated to Sequoia 15.3.1 and again Apple decided to turn on Apple Intelligence, so is it going to be like with windows when I have to check to make sure things I disabled stays disabled when I update even a minor version?

If I disable something, certainly something like Ai, then I disable it for a reason.

I believe it was all over the Apple sites when 15.3.x and 18.3.x (iPhone/iPad) was released that Apple Intelligence would be turned on. Every update turns on Bluetooth and runs down my battery. If you choose the Apple path, you have to go with the Apple chosen direction.

My Mac is an older one with Intel inside (wink) so Apple Intelligence isn't relevant for me, but 15.3.1 changed my desktop wallpaper to a single static (Apple) picture frown

I usually have it set to cycle at random through a folder-full of favourite pictures; it's been that way for so long I'd forgotten where the folder was so I could put it back!

It also blocked (again) Chrome's access to Chromecast devices, a MacOS bug that seems to have been there since 15.1 (google for "macos 15.1 chromecast not working").

I've become increasingly unimpressed with Apple's pre-release QA over recent years... an update usually introduces some trivial change (not necessarily what could be really called a bug) that shouldn't have happened. These days I wait for a week or so before installing any updates, and google for "macos <update version> issues" first to see if it finds anything and what a workaround might be.

When they updated to 15.3 I can understand them turning on AI, I don't agree with it, but I understand it, but 15.3.1 is about security, or so we have been led to believe, so why turn AI back on?
Is it now that at every update I have to turn AI off?

My wall paper is okay, but the update did also turn my Wi-fi back on, which I don't use. Not sure why they did that. i will get it to forget the network, then if they turn it back on again it will do nothing.

I have read that it have re-enabled Icloud on some machines, I don't have my computer signed in to an Apple Account, so not a problem here.

I had a muck around with Apple AI, but I was just being nosy, but now that is it, I have no interest in it, nor ChatGPT, or Gemini or any other of this stuff that they try to push onto us. My Echo dots are about as close to AI as I want to get.

I suspect so, they turn Bluetooth on automatically every OS update on my iPhone and iPad, and I have to turn it off again. They've been doing that now since about iOS 8.

If you are an iPhone/iPad user (I know Adrian isn’t) , it can be worth leaving it enabled even if you don’t have to connected to a WiFi network.

Various of the bits of Apple “magic” between devices make use of the WiFi (macOS/iOS will setup an adhoc WiFi network between themselves behind the scenes for some things (and they use Bluetooth to work out whether they can do that).

Which is why Apple will re-enable WiFi some times, to try and help those users who might benefit from those features but have no idea they’ve locked themselves out of them by disabling WiFi/Bluetooth. It would be good though if they had a “Yes, I know I am breaking things that I don’t know about, please turn it off for good” for those users who really want that.

I’m guessing you can turn it off permanently using the device management tools, there must be plenty of corporate users who want to completely turn it off.

If you have just one iPhone (provided by employer) that you need best battery life, and you use no other apple devices or bluetooth headsets or car connection, it is frustrating. I understand it is turned on due to reducing support calls to Apple.

I went into settings to go to forget network, only to find i had already done it, so turning on wi-fi is not going to do anything, still not the point.
