Vodafone mobile internet... laptop dongle

[link to this post]

Hello... this is my very first post on here, so i hope i'm doing it right, and in the right place!!

i'm not very good on computers so please bear with me..
i have a Vodafone dongle for my laptop. i can access the internet, and send/receive Emails ok. but i've recently joined the Freecycle site, and i'm receiving Emails from them fine, but when i try to post an offer, i get to a window that asks for my ISP incoming and outgoing server addresses. i thought this was just 'Vodafone', so wrote it in the boxes, and got told it was an error. so i tried again, and when it gets to the 'sending' window, i don't even get the 'address' window now, it just goes straight to the error window. Does anyone have any idea what i need to do... and how... so i can post offers on their site. i don't even know how to find the bit on my laptop that tells me what my addresses are. Can anyone help?? Thanks in advance smile

If you are using Vodafone's own mail system ( ie. you have an email address on Vodafone.net ) then these server names might work:
- server for incoming mail ........ pop.vodafone.net
- server for outgoing mail ........ smtp.vodafone.net
These are the names I use with Outlook Express to access my own account on the Vodafone mail system. Hope it helps.

Hello,

Most ISPs will not allow you to send emails unless you use their mail system. I think this is to prevent spam. You are able to collect emails as many ISPs support standard POP3 mailboxes . When I use my Vodafone dongle with my laptop I cannot use OE to send emails using my ISP email (BT) so have to use BT's webmail. This works fine.

Even using a ADSL connection at home, you cannot usually sent emails using a different ISP's outgoing server i.e you have to use the email server of your ISP.

Also some ISPs require authentication of outgoing emails. Easy to do it just means ticking correct boxes in OE email account set-up

I have found that putting "send.vodafone.net" into the outgoing server settings of Outlook Express or Thunderbird, does the trick.

Some will also offer a different port, such as 587 to use with authentication if 25 is blocked.

I've found that the vodafone server is a bit unreliable, has taken up to 4 days for an email to arrive when sent via that server. I now use the yahoo servers which provide an alternative port number.
