download problems with Orange Mobile Broadband

[link to this post]

Hi,

I use Orange mobile broadband with a HUWAEI E160X dongle.

I get pretty decent speeds of about 150k/sec when connected to the 3G+ network, which is most of the time, and the dongle is fine for surfing, watching streaming video and using Bittorrent. However, I have a problem downloading files.

For the majority of files, when I try and download the file it starts, but then freezes a few megabytes into the file. It doesn't disconnect, it just stops. If I try and download the same file again, it freezes at exactly the same point.

Initially I noticed this problem when downloading from Rapidshare and Megaupload, which I know some ISPs have started blocking, so I wasn't too surprised. However, I am also finding that I am also unable to download some Windows updates and updates for my laptop software, as well as from other 'legitimate' sources. This is not acceptable.

There is no problem with the signal or the connection when this happens, as I am still able to browse web sites or download via torrent.

I have scoured the web for postings related to this issue, and there doesn't appear to be many, so I wondering if its some kind of fault with the dongle? Interestingly though, I did find this, which describes exactly the same problem as I'm having, only with a different dongle on the Vodafone network. I should mention that I used to use a 3 dongle, and this problem never occurred.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? More importantly, how do I solve it?? I am using Windows Vista and I have tried using different browsers, which makes no difference.

Shot in the dark, but do you have any antivirus software that proxies your downloads to scan for viruses? If you do, it's possible that is where the timeout is occurring. Try disabling the antivirus and visit a "safe" site to test a large download.

Ordinary proxies can also timeout, so check to see if you have set a proxy server in your internet browser.

Hi, sorry to hear that you are having problems.

Best people to talk to would be Orange CMTS (data support level 2). If you have an orange mobile dial 150 choose option 3 and then follow the on screen prompts.

There may be some limits on your account that might be causing this issue or something on you laptop hogging data or causing problems
