Exactly that.
Dongle plugged into the router, router upstairs in a bedroom sending the wireless signal downstairs. And as I say, moving the router about seems to significantly affect the download speed.

You can try putting the dongle on a USB extension cable and position the dongle up against the glass of a window.

Over Christmas my wife and I were in a remote hotel in Yorkshire, having the Vodafone dongle up against the glass made the difference between Internet albeit slow and NO Internet. As you may have found, the verticle/horizontal position of the dongle can be critical.

Cheers!

Yeah as soon as my router arrives I'll be locating it on my bedroom window cill, for a more direct pathway to the mast. Hopefully further gains will be received!!! smile

I got this amazing result yesterday:-

Sadly it was a one off, but I was hitting 5Mbps + consistently. Lets hope Three gets the upgrades done PDQ, so that we can all enjoy the best speeds possible!!! wink

Does anyone have any tips on how to reduce ping??? I'd love to keep it at its lowest of around 70-80ms, around the clock.

That was a good speed, but your PING looks high; no idea why. I just did a very early am test and got this best ever result, so who knows what we will get when they upgrade the masts.

I have ordered this dongle now and also have the router edimax 3G-6200N and i get 5.4mbs average speed with the mf112 dongle so i wondered if the new dongle improved speeds past 7.2mbs would the router reduce it as the router says its only for 3g/HSPDA not hspa+.

Has anyone tried it in the pc and in the router to see if there is a speed difference?

Yes.

It's the same whether it's plugged into the computer or whether it goes via the router (Edimax 3G-6200n)

The downstream is pretty solid (5.4Mbps) despite the router only reporting a signal strength of 47%

The positioning does matter greatly. The upstream is more picky; it won't go above 1Mbps unless it's exactly right when it will stick at about 1.5Mbps.

Average ping is about 70ms.

With regard to the faster speeds - if I saw it hit say 7Mbps of the 7.2Mbps that the Edimax supports, then I'd think it was the choke point. However I did come across this bit of text on the ADSL24 website:

http://adsl24.co.uk/broadband/mobile/

When talking about Mobile Broadband speed, mobile operators refer to the theoretical maximum speed, known as the technical standard. In reality, it's not possible to achieve this speed and we want to be honest with you about what you can expect. Even though the network's theoretical maximum speed is 7.2 Mb, you'll actually experience up to a maximum of 5.6 Mb

Which suggests I'm getting the maximum available (or near as) and although I am getting an antenna put up on the chimney next month I'm not expecting huge gains (no pun intended).

Yes i get that but what is the router was only able to do 7.2mbs via 3G if another device which goes past 7.2 the router might not support it to the maximum speed. Will have to see will arrive tuesday.

My router wont go past 500-700kbs UL but if i plug it directly into the pc its 1.5mbs UL but i dont upload stuff so i dont care.

I am using a 3 E367 dongle with a Zoom travel router. I had to update the firmware to 1.0.12 (available from the Zoom website) and factory reset the router afterwards but after that it plugged straight in and worked without having to enter any settings into the router.
The new dongle is great my signal from the mast was 19% and is now fluctuating between 58 and 100 % depending on conditions. I have it upstairs in the nearest window to the mast and the dongle is on a 2 M USB extension. Full streaming video at last! It's a brilliant piece of kit.
My "old" dongle was a ZTE MF112.

I think I've just disproved the theoretical maximum of 5.6Mbps on a 7.2Mbps service.

So that bit simply isn't true.
