'H' connection question

[link to this post]

Had a speed comparsion with my work mates on Speedtest.net, all showing H signal, me on Talkmobile (Vodafone), them on 3, Orange, and O2. They were all 1.6 to 2Mbps, me showing 0.3Mbps. frown

However, I have since discovered if I disable and re-enable the Data option on my Android, my average speed is up around 2.3Mbps. smile Thing is, if the phone is showing H, why does it sometimes opt for the slower (3G?) option?

Yesterday, right up to 3pm, I was getting over 2Mbps, then did the data re-set a couple of times and it went to the slower 0.3Mbps profile. Another re-set or two, and got the faster profile again, all the time showing H. One thing I notice is the phone (LG Optimus One) doesn't seem to ever show a 3G symbol, usually G when on 2G setting, and H on 3G setting. Maybe I've just answered my own question...

When describing the above speed variations, the 'Reported Network' type is HSDPA.

Yes..

You need to tell the phone to connect to HSDPA only.. The it won't even try to go for 3G/2G signal.

H is good - H is really good on 3 as that's HSDPA + wink

Not strictly speaking true.

Most phones will either do both GSM & UMTS or just UMTS.
GSM = 2G, UMTS = 3G and HSDPA.
