Freeview will get interference from 4G

It seems some Freeview TV viewers will have to pay £200 to continue to get reception due to interference from the 4G network, I just read in The Independent.
Households within 2km of a 4G transmitter will cause interference with the Freeview signal causing pixelation and loss.

Will - should be more like may.

We ran a news item on this ages ago. Around £180m from 4G auction will go to fixing this issue.

Arises from having too small a guard band between spectrum users.

OK I didn't see that news at the time.

It seems they are saying that this £180million is sufficient for the hardware, but not the installation.

Oh, that would mean just about everyone in populated areas once 4G is rolled out country wide !
Surely some mistake, or is Ofcom really so incompetent ?

Pretty much everyone is within 2km of a phone mast

I get no Vodafone signal from a mast just 400 metres away.

Allow journalistic leeway, and they do mention the 2 million estimate.

Old analogue TV used to have interference all the time, just the signal nature meant it degraded better. Digital tends to have a cliff and pixelation is more noticeable.

I think I now understand what this is about.
Some areas have poor quality Freeview signal, and need to use large antenna and/or signal amplifier.
If they also happen to be close to 4G transmitter, the Freeeview signal could be 'masked' and become unusable.
So they may have to switch to satellite TV service, ( unlikely to be in cabled areas ).
