Interesting.. I have a similar issue with my 4S - switch the tethering on, it says there is 1 connection, but my iPad doesn't connect (spins) and gets no IP address off the phone. I've always rebooted, never thought about the Flight mode. Once I've rebooted the phone, it works continuously (I'm on O2).

See similar and toggling hotspot/airplane mode often fix it.

I've seen this on My Galaxy S2 on Three too. The phone is connected to 3G but the connection on the PC stops. The toggle into and out of flight mode can be a fix as is a reboot. I find that getting some data flowing through the phone works too, i.e run the speedtest app on the phone then the hotspot data connection tends to return.

I've seen suggestions that it's the Three DNS servers causing problems and I've had it happen on my dongle too, the router shows the dongle is connected but browsing doesn't work. Fortunately it's a pretty rare occurrence.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I've noticed that since upgradiing to iOS 6.1 my iPhone 4S no longer has this issue. Anyone else noticed this?
