The sim seems to carry or open up a route for APN's to be downloaded and set on first connection but its erratic

Some devices have tables of networks. The SIM identifies itself as a "Vodafone UK" and the device looks up in the table and sets the APN.

Vodafone is one of the complex ones as they have a different APN for prepay and contract services. You may be prompted by the device for which one (Android often does this).

Whenever I load a new Three SIM into an unlocked phone it spends 10-15 minutes downloading all sorts of (unspecified) settings. IIRC three or four downloads in total.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

That will be specific to that make of phone. On my OnePlus 7 and my old Pixel phones, nothing automatically downloaded. On iPhones there is no auto download at all.

Some (Android) phones may be configured so that if a SIM from provider Y is inserted, there is a list of apps that provider wants installed.

Mobile networks want to return to the days of a "Vodafone" or an "o2 phone" rather than you having a Samsung S8, or an iPhone 8. Hence the branding on many handsets, which Android makers allow, Apple refused at the very beginning.

Personally I see it as a vendor to avoid!

Archos; LG; Sony; Samsung and Huawei have all done it for me when inserting a Three SIM.

How do you like the OnePlus 7?

I ordered an OnePlus 8 Pro on Tuesday evening, just too late for Wednesday delivery. It was despatched on Wednesday and tracked as moving on Thursday but never reached "Out for delivery".

4pm Wednesday the tracking changed to "Delayed in transit" and delivery now expected May1 or May 2. If both fail than I can ask for a refund.

I've got a second hand Pro 7 5G, and its really used for experimenting with cellular network tech, I've rooted it, and run apps you can't run otherwise. That of course means I can't use some apps like Netflix. Its a large screen, which is easy to read, but heavy in the pocket and hand.

Annoying, hopefully you get it this weekend, or Monday!

Huh, I wonder what they're downloading. I've only PAYG with Three and O2, but I have used EE and Vodafone contract SIMs. Maybe its trying to download the configuration settings, rather than apps, and the database is very slow - or a long way away!

It does say things like "Configuration settings", but that's a very wide range.

It clearly sets the APN, as the phones were all previously on other networks that didn't do anything similarly protracted. Maybe one quick download, whereas these come spaced out.

I am rather worried about the size and weight, but we shall have to see.

Basically there aren't any decent phones even the size of my current P10 Lite. Not long ago we would have called them tablets LOL.
