"In my youth"! we used to go to Ironbridge a few times a year as my parents and my Sunday outing. In those days you could still drive across the Iron Bridge!
One side of it wasn't too bad for the car (8HP Ford Anglia 494A) to get up the hill. The other side which was the normal way in and out my Mum and I sometimes had to get out and push-help it.
Then they closed it to vehicles and the steep way was the only realistic one, as there was almost nowhere to park on the easier side.
Edit: I just had a look on wikipedia to find what year it was closed to traffic and it says:
"In 1934 it was designated a scheduled monument and closed to vehicular traffic. Tolls for pedestrians were collected until 1950, when the bridge was transferred into public ownership".
It was definitely open for light traffic in the late 1950s, and no tolls. Definitely closed again at some time before I moved up to Manchester.
