My speed just shot up - do I need to do anything?

[link to this post]

Having just spent a couple of hours fiddling with filters, I have found out that the filter on my lounge phone socket (Sky box, home phone/answering machine) is seemingly a bit rubbish. Having swapped it for a nice new one, the speed on my router (plugged in to socket in my Study which has not been touched by my 'filter fiddling') has gone up from 4800 (ish) to 7200 (ish).

I'm nearing the end of my (8-meg upgrade) 10 day training period - I may even have finished it - is there anything I should do as a result of this significant speed shift? My speed now is substantially higher that during the previous week or so. I've read about having profiles reset etc. but I confess to having a little/dangerous knowledge about all this stuff.

All advice gratefully rec'd.

Also, I have tried plugging my router into the BT test socket inside the BT master socket and got 7600 and an improved SNR, up from 4-6 to 10-12. The master BT socket is in the hall (no power point nearby), my router is downstairs in the study (near to the BT master) and the only other device plugged in is my Sky box/phone in the lounge. I can't really plug my router into the BT socket permanently so don't believe a replacement master faceplate is an option. So what can/should I do? What can I buy to get those last bits of speed? May not seem worth it, but I'm afraid I am a compulsive fiddler.

leave be, dont turn off the router during the night and it will auto adjust as needed - well in theory .

If you can't live with the router plugged into the master socket, and the study is too far away for the modem lead to reach, so you intend to keep the modem/router plugged into an extension socket, you could try cutting the ring wire (connection #3) in the master and extension sockets. This ring wire can drag in interference from electrical appliances and AM radio signals. It is not required if you have a micro-filter on every socket that a 'phone (or telephony device such as a sky box) is plugged into.

It's worth doing anything you can to get that bit more speed, so long as it's not at the expense of stability.
Your two highest sync speeds (7200 and 7600) are well into the middle of the sync range for 6 and 6.5Mbps profiles, so hopefully you'll get put onto one of those profiles, and if you can maintain sync above either 6816 or 7392kbps, you'll stay there.

What does the ring wire do? What does unplugging it actually deprive me of? And do I actually cut it or just disconnect it?

What does the ring wire do?

Carries the 'ring' signal from the master socket to older style 'phones (usually the ones with bells in), to make them ring.
Oh, and it also acts like a huge antenna, sucking in interference (which is why a lot of people cut it.

What does unplugging it actually deprive me of?

Nothing, as modern 'phones tend not to need the ring wire anyway.
If you've any that do, it still doesn't matter, as all ADSL micro-filters have the required circuitry to duplicate an incoming ring.
I've got three 'phones and only one (a cheap

Cheers - really appreciate this.

So I have to disconnect it from ALL sockets? Including those that have nothing plugged in? If so, I'll book out an hour or so - I have a few sockets around the house that the builders installed.

In theory, only the one where the router is plugged in, but I found it helped me to disconnect all six in my house.
Start with just the router one, and if you don't drop sync as often (or sync higher) leave it at that. If you don't get the required results, do them all.

Please note, this is the 'next best thing' to fitting an ADSL face-plate/splitter at the master, and connecting the router to that, but is often just as effective.

Tried pulling out the orange wire in all sockets - no difference.

The test socket remains significantly stronger signal and SNR
7600 with a downstream SNR of 10-12db
versus
7100/7200 with a downstream SNR of 4-5db
with any other socket in the house, including the plug on the front of the master socket. Unplugging all other devices in the house (Sky box, answer phone etc) makes no difference either way - they're on good filters anyway.

Even using a telephone extension lead to the test socket from the Study gives the 7600 reading (7616 actually).

I can only conclude that the faceplate on the master socket is now robbing me of signal.

So, the best solution would seem to be a faceplate...BUT...I just can't see a (neat) path from the master socket (in the hall) to my router (in the study). I can't put my router in the hall because there are no power points. And there is no way I can have trailing cables - my wife/little boy would have a fit/trip respectively.

HOWEVER...

The only thing I did notice is that the wiring in the master socket to the current faceplate is long, 6 inches visible, a lot of this wire stripped of the outer white sheath (2.5 inches of little wires sticking out). Also, there are a number of wires coming out of the white sheath but only 2 (3 with the orange one) connected - blue/white & white/blue, again 2.5 inches long. Other wires are wrapped around the sheath. Would this make a difference? They are White/Yellow, White/Green, Green/White and are just wrapped round the white sheath in a spiral. Why aren;t they connected? Should I do anything with them?
