Orange Broadband and Linksys WAG54G

[link to this post]

Hi

I'm having problems with my Orange Broadband connection and my Linksys WAG54G.

Most of the time (but not all) I can connect to the WAG54G via my wireless connection. However, on an annoyingly regular occurence I lose my ADSL connection. The upshot of all this frustration is that I tinkered with my router via the wireless admin pages and I have totally mucked up my router settings.

Can anyone on this forum (hopefully another Orange user) confirm how I should set up my WAG54G and what settings work for them

Annoyingly, the Orange Help Line refuses to support anything other than their livebox/supplied modems.

Whilst i'm reasonably technically savvy I am no wireless or network genius and as this is my first post on here please be gentle with me!

for clarification, is it connecting to the internet at all ?

Can you access it via a bit of ethernet cable, even if this means parking the WAG54G next to the PC and away from the phone line.

General settings for the ADSL side

username@fs
password
G.dmt or multimode
PPPoA
VCMux
VPI / VCI 0 / 38

Hi

Thanks for the reply. At the moment I cannot connect to the internet at all.

Do I have to enable port 80 in the port forwarding admin area? ie check the box?

The wireles connection is also intermittent but my house does have rather thick walls!

can you connect to the router reliably. If not use a wire to set it up at least.

Hi

I assume you mean use an ethernet cable? I have had the router for years and have never had any real trouble with it until recently. So my recollection of how I set it up is a little vague

:S

Do you know the significance of the different colour lights on the router? Sometimes the power light is red, sometimes green, sometimes flashing red/green

Hi

I didn't have a spare ethernet cable so I unplugged the router and literally sat it on top of my computer in the hope that this extremely short range would improve things. And it did!

I can now access my admin page and have adjusted the settings as suggested below. And voila! I can now connect to the internet

Of course, having a wireless router on top of your computer kinda negates the whole point BUT AT LEAST IT WORKS!

I am going to leave it for a while and see if I contine to get drop outs

Dunno if I mentioned it but I am using Windows Vista - not sure if thats relevant?

Thanks for all your help

Regards

Paul

Glad you have it working. However, from your last two posts it looks like the router is about to die - particularly its power supply - should not be flashing any red. May be time for a new one as it is so old, before it packs up completely.

Or of course, may just be a problem with its power cable, not the internals.

Hmm, good point. I'll leave it be for a while then maybe will have to part with some cash for a new one.

Would you recommend Linksys again if I do need to replace it?

I have a Linksys WAG54GS - 4-port & wireless - very pleased with it. Not as keen on the WUSB54GS USB hub adapter just because it is clumsy, but mostly it all works. Never tried anything else.
