Laptop won't connect to internet with WEP

[link to this post]

I have a friends laptop that won't connect to the internet with Wi Fi with WEP turned on. All my laptops connect OK. It says there is a good signal. It will go on the internet via my neighbours un secured wi fi. Any ideas.

The most likely explanation is that you haven't entered the same key on the laptop and on the wireless ADSL router and/or you haven't set them both to the same type of encryption.

By the way, WEP is no longer considered very secure. Use WPA if you can.

I know WEP is not the best but I have to wait a few weks before I can change it. The laptop & wifi are both on the same encryption & have the same password. My 2 laptops both work fine & also other friends laptops work fine. I've gone over it several times yesterday & today re entering the passwords etc. It says it is logged onto my Netgear & the signal is very good. The password numbers are definately correct. As I've already said it is the only one that won't log on to the internet unless it uses an unsecure (neighbours) wi fi.

How are you transferring the password between machines? Are you just typing them in? Maybe the rougue laptop is set to a different keyboard layout and you do not spot the oddity when typing the key into the masked box. Try cutting and pasting from plain text.

Very good answer, but I start with putting the password into Notepad & copying & pasting so there is no mistake.

Can you clarify "won't connect to the internet..[/i["?

Does the laptop connect with the Wi-Fi? Does it get an IP adddress?, etc.

The laptop has a good connection to the wi fi router/modem. Signalstrength Very good. But when you click on IE it won't connect to the internet. I've tried opening on various other pages but still nothing. All the other laptops I've set up including one since this problem have connected automatically once the password & key numbers are put in, however with this one I've even put the IP address manually but still nothing.

Is there a firewall on the laptop that won't let it talk to the router, even though the signal is strong? Does the router have a web UI? and if so can you access it?
