name of application for router port forwarding

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I use a LinkSys wireless modem and had no trouble setting up port forwarding for uTorrent, as the instructions were on the uTorrent site, including setting the application name to 'uTor'. I assume this means 'accept all requests to and from 'uTor' on port xxxx.' However, I'm trying to open 5 ports for Pacific Poker, and I've no idea how to name the app in my router config. I suppose I should call it 'Poker', but unless I know it's correct internet identifier name, I might as well call it Dave, as I'm guessing the router will not open the ports for an application that it doesn't know.

So, how do I find the name, or have I got this all wrong??

Isn't this just a label so you know what the entry is for?

I've used several routers over the years and none of them has required me to enter names in order to port forward - just port numbers.

Admittedly, some routers do have pre-set options for specific purposes (mine has pre-sets for DNS, POP3, HTTP, SMTP etc) but these are merely to simplify setup and relieve the user of the chore of finding and entering the relevant port numbers.

I doubt that you need to enter any specific name . . . .

OK, thanks. It's just that, as the utorrent guide used 'utor', I thought there might be a 4-letter code for apps that need port forwarding. Stupid concept, really!!
