What's up Doc?

So my wife has treated me to a spanking new laptop ... but alas, it has Vista installed. So what's the problem I hear you ask!

I am trying to network to a Desktop PC with XP installed and despite the fact that it knows the Desktop is available on the network, my laptop cannot communicate with the printer or the shared documents. Yet strangely enough, it was able to communicate with another laptop within the network AND communicate with all shared folders. As a further test, I even connected my printer to the Vista machine and found the other laptop could communicate with it. So where's the problem and what could I be missing out on? What bugs me is that I have had no previous problem with networking, in XP I found it a cinch but Vista is a different kettle of fish!

Any help would contribute towards helping me retain my sanity, or at least, what's left of it.

windows ad-hoc networking is famously unreliable, do you have the same username and password on all the machines (alternatively "Guest" access enabled).

Can it see the folders but not open them ? Error message ?

Sorry, I've only just returned to this thread after trying to sort out my mate's networking. I've had success with my own and therefore expected to use the same process with his. In my case, I think it was a question of persevering with the USB flash drive Network files.

However, I now find the same problem with my mate's PC and despite all efforts, we see the other PC, the folders and printer, but can't communicate with them.

The following error comes up:

"\\HP-Pavilion\important files not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

I've checked the signal strength and that's fine. Where applicable, I have set file and printer sharing as appropriate but still no joy.

Any further ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

It's likely it's permissions then

On the XP machine (which is serving or hosting the shared folder and printer) go into control panel - folder options (or tools - folder options from an explorer window) - view tab - and tick "use simple file sharing" at the bottom
