No IP address!

[link to this post]

OK here is my problem, I'm on virgin adsl max and i joined in June of this year now to start i was using my net-gear DG834G and access the net fine through my wireless Toshiba laptop, now over the past say month and a bit i have been unable to get any connection what so ever through my router, when i do try it will not assign a IP address for some reason, so i called the ever "helpful" virgin tech support only for them to say everything was fine line wise i have a strong line apparently and they thought it was a faulty router. So i decided to buy myself a new one from PC World which is a ZyXEL P660HW now upon setting this up i am now receiving the same problem no IP address the router syncs with the DSL line at max speeds 8128Kbs or something along those lines but still for the life of me will not connect to the net. So I'm back to using the old speed touch ST330 which connects no problem.

Now if anybody could shed some light on this then I'd be most grateful and maybe even throw in a bottle of whiskey lol!!

Regards

Steve

what has no IP address - the router or the laptop ? Is it the same if the laptop is wired into the router.

OK, are you confident the username and password are correct, have you selected PPPoA and checked that the VPI and VCI settings are 0,38 (I may have those in the wrong order). On a Netgear you can click on Connection Status and "Connect" to see what it does.

does it show the sync speed OK under "modem" on the front page? Does it go LCP coming up / LCP down cyclically ?

Yeah i unplugged the speed touch when i tried it with both routers, on the netgear i have all the lights i should have and there green. Now on the ZyXEL status page it shows a up-stream and down-stream connection but that still doesn't give me an IP

the Netgear was not connecting to the exchange - reporting zero speed - maybe it is dead.

Have you tried the alternative test login names with the Zyxel ?

Well i've just spent the best part of an hour trying to connect with the Zyxel and no joy, when i run the setup it just keeps dropping the adsl line now so i really don't know what it is, no point in calling virgin as they don't support it so looks like i'm stuck with the speed touch

please try the bt_test login. It can shift a stuck session where you don't get an IP.

no password or put a space in if the router demands it.

speedtest@speedtest_domain is another one, I think these will work with Virgin unless it's a datastream circuit. All we're after is an IP address after all !

Just use the config pages for the WAN in case any wizard does something unwanted.

When did you update the router firmware, Steve? Might be worth going back to an earlier version and see if that helps.

No IP address mean that you are not connecting to Virgin's DHCP server. Are you using the correct User Name in your router for Virgin. I have had this problem before and it was cured by inserting adsl into the customer's primary ID. That is to say [email protected]. Have you checked that?

In response to beerhunter.....Yeah mate I'm using the correct user name and password i really for the life of me don't know why the router won't pick it up and also it's not holding the DSL connection,, just keeps dropping, like i said i can connect via speed touch with no problems.

In response to rikbean, i haven't updated the firmware as the router is only a week old, plus on there website there are currently no newer versions! I shall try everything yet again today and see if anything changes, really starting to wind me up now.

Ok well I've spent the best part of the morning trying to correct this but to no avail, It did connect once using the btdomain and gave me an IP but then it dropped it's connection and wouldn't connect after that, I've noticed now though that the DSL light will continue to flash a lot, it will stay solid but only for a few mins then it drops and try's to re sync, could this be a line fault or another faulty Router? I'm tempted to go and buy another net gear tomorrow but i suspect if i do i will continue to have this problem.

so you have two routers that won't hold sync, both using the same TI AR7 chipset. If you're going to try anothe rrouter go for a speedtouch as it has a different chipset and decent login so you can see the PPP login process in action.

If the dSL is dropping out then the PPP isn't going to get the chance to negotiate an IP.

Yeah as you said with the net gear it wasn't showing any speeds but the zyxel occasional shows the line sync but the drops it every so often so I'll look into buying a speed touch then and see if that works.

DSL light on steady and reporting a connection speed, a step forward ! You need to look att he log of the connection dialog to see what's going off - post it here for others with speedtouches to compare ?

This is fairly normal, AFAIK.. There should be a setting somewhere (I don't have this model router, so can't say where) which will be set to 5 minutes or something like that. Set it to zero and you should be good to go..

So it is getting an IP ? I was expecting to see two CHAP challenges, one from the BT ERX and the second from the ISP, but maybe Virgin are using Datastream and there is only one. On the other hand perhaps the second one timed out after one minute.

Right I've tried everything under the sun the router connects with the 2 bt test logins but then they drop and i get the error that the timeout has reached, i try reconnecting and i get the same message, I've came to the conclusion that it must be something virgin side as i can find no other reason why i have 3 routers and can't connect with any of them, yet the USB Speed touch connects fine! Anyway my MAC code is with ADSL24 now so hopefully I'll have some joy with them, thanks to all who gave me advice it was much appreciated.
