Can I utilise the Home Hub?

[link to this post]

Hey all, registered here to ask a question as I need some specifics - I've been doing some research but now need to ask some questions (I apologise now for the long post)....

I am currently with Post Office for broadband and have a DG834G as part of my contract. I am in the process of putting together a media centre system. I have a macmini which is connected up to my AV system in my lounge and will eventually be a PVR. However, in order to use this as my media centre I want to have everything else (printer, hard drives etc) in my office so as not to clutter up the lounge. Basically, I am looking to set up a dummy terminal preferably a mac (which may be an OSX86 but that's another story) where all the drives will be installed (with my music and movies) and from there I want to stream wirelessly to my macmini. Currently, my DG834G is set up in the lounge and connected by ethernet to the macmini and PS3 (allowing me to connect wirelessly with my work laptop in the office).

The office has no telephone point so cannot move DG834G into there and enable wireless on the macmini (how simply would it be if I could do that!) so basically I need to decide the most suitable option for connecting all of these up. Obviously the simplest way for me to do this would be to get USB / PCI adaptor and plug it into the PC but I don't want to restrict myself in the office to just having one point therefore a wireless access point would be more preferable.

So after the long winded build up, here is my question.....

I have got hold of a Home Hub v2.0 - a friend has swapped ISPs and no longer needs it - and was wondering if I could use this in any way? Can the HH be turned into a Wireless Access Point? From my understanding (research on google), the HH 2.0 can't be used with any ISP apart from BT is that correct? Can it be hacked in any way? Flashed or something?

If I can't, that would mean I couldn't use it in the lounge as my main wireless router, but wondering if it can be set up as a Wireless Access Point in the office? This would be ideal as given the HH has a USB connection on it, I could also share my Printer from this room. The additional speed and range from the N technology would be ideal for streaming media too (assuming that at some point I upgraded the DG834G obviously).

Just basically after some inspiration.

I have other options but these will be a pain....I could get a telephone point into the office or I could run an ethernet cable through to there but both would prove difficult.

Also, I have stumbled across a discussion on a workaround to use the HH with a different ISP but it means piggy backing it to the DG834G using ethernet however, I have not tested this yet so no idea if it works. if it does however, it would mean I would have upgraded to N and therefore could get an N adapter for the office. If I can do it without having to buy anything else though, this would be great.

Again, apologies for the long post. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Using the Home Hub as a wireless access point is the simplest solution, which you seem to have spotted, and is basically

Easier to link than retype my usual guide

Hey, I'd actually bookmarked that link already, it was your process I'd found that I mentioned at the bottom of my post however, from what I can gather, this is to use the HH as a wireless access point piggy backed on to the ADSL router right? Which would still leave me needing an adaptor for the office?

I'm assuming from your response then that I can't use the HH then in the other room?

The HH will only work for you as a wireless access point, where you site it depends on how long the Ethernet cable is.

I've not stumbled onto anyone using the HH2.0 with another ISP, it was possible with the v1 devices I believe.

If ethernet is the issue then HomePlug devices can solve the wall problem.

I've set up the HH as per your instructions, worked a treat. Siting it is another story, hadn't considered the homeplug devices.
