Windows 2000 Pro - Netgear DG834 - Network PCs

Hi,

I would very much appreciate some help.

Trying to network two computers so that I can save files on 2nd computer.

Two PCs :

1. Dell

2. Atholon

Both have Windows 2000 Professional.

Got AVG Anti-Virus

And Outpost



Connected to Netgear ADSL Firewall Router DG834

Both PCs have same Workgroup names

Under

Local Area Connection Properties ,

the following three are ticked :

1. Client for Microsoft Networks

2. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

3. Internet Protocol ( TCP/IP)

On both computers I have assigned files for sharing and there are blue hands on those files

I am not sure what else I have to do to get network going so that Aholon can access Dell PC.

Have you gone to My Network Places to see if you can see the other machine via the network?

Also ensure the Workgroup name on both machines are indentical (right click my computer > properties > network identification > properties) followed by a reboot.

Hi have you got avg free or the avg that comes with a firewall?
I was using AVG Internet Security and had to allow file and print sharing in the avg firewall
I think if you use the preset firewall rules for small home or office network or something not stand alone computer it should allow the PCs to see each other in the network it was a bit hit and miss tho sometimes when I rebooted the network on the PC with AVG installed would be blank.

Of course if you dont have the Avg with firewall then I dont know what to suggest. I imagine you are using outpost as your firewall so you may have to possibly do something similar in outpost but Ive never used it so I cant really help.

try setting netbios to enable instead of auto on both pcs.

Do you have the same user with the same password on both PCs?

Thanks for all the posts.

The AVG is free.

I have got Outpost ( I have disabled it on the " Dell " ) just in case. Outpost is affecting it.

I have got the same name for " Workgroup "

I have now got same user name on each PC with no password. ( Is that risky )



I have had some success.

I connected up another PC with Name : " Viglen " which has got Windows 98se.

The " Viglen " can see " Athlon " . I have been able to transfer files from " Viglen " to " Athlon "

On the Athlon PC I go to :

My Network Places

then

Computers near me

It just shows :

1. Athlon

2. Viglen

It does not show " Dell "

-------------------------------------------

On the " Dell " PC

I click computers near me

and the following shows up after awhile

Workgroup ( Name ) is not accessible

The list of server for the workgroup is not currently available.

Hi,

Success at last.

On the " Dell " PC

I had re-booted the computer

Outpost was on.

I exited and shutdown Outpost completely.

( Athlon PC does not have Outpost installed )

That solved the problem.

I can now see the " Athlon " Pc.

And I have been able to transfer files from " Dell " to " Athlon " PC.

Which was what I was trying to achieve.

So now I wonder how I can adjust the set up in Outpost so that it will allow me to network with other PCs.

Managed to solve it.

In Outpost

Gone to Options

Clicked " Systems "

Under Netbios

Clicked : Allow Netbios Communications.

That has worked.

Don't understand why !

The firewall blocks Netbios because it's an unsafe protocol to expose to the internet as just about anyone can wander around your disks easily.
