PoE Networking

[link to this post]

What is required for PoE.
Basically need Wireless Access Points to run over PoE as customer doesn't want people to be able to accidently switch WAP's off.
Looking at having upto 3 WAP's in Building in total. although think that only two really required and 1 can be just normally powered rather than PoE if neccessary.

Then also need to connect upto ADSL Modem/Router. (Wether ISP Supplied or buy there own not sure yet.)

As far as i can see apart from WAP's looking at D-Link DAP-2590 (if any others suitable open to suggestions) need a PoE Switch Looking at EDiMAX NET-POE-4_PLUS_4 from Solwise (again open to other suggestions) and the just connect WAP's to switch with CAT5 Cable and presumably just connect ADSL Router to Switch with CAT5.

Also what might be required to give External WiFi Coverage. They are thinking off giving a Campsite WiFi Access so would need to have as wide a spread as possible and maximum range.

Please help.

You should put an RJ45 socket at each end of the Cat5e cable. Then link from those to the WAPs using short patch leads. At the Switch/Router end either use a small 8 way patch panel or a double size electrical back box with a front plate housing four RJ45 sockets. It will look neater and be easier to sort out if it goes wrong.

Can you give a rough indication of the layout of the campsite to the building(s) where the outdoor access point(s) could be mounted

Basically, is the building (where power and the internet connection will be located) central to the site, on one edge or in a corner?

Also, what is the maximum distance of a plot from building and how many plots / hookups is it trying to cover?

As regards outdoor antennas, there are omni-directionals, sectors (90-120 deg) and directionals (~45 deg) that I could suggest based on experience (Ubiquiti).

For the campsite wi-fi, it would need to be separated from any office wi-fi needed in the building - a spare machine with 2 or more network adapters running a captive portal (something like pfSense) would work well for this type of setup.
