Unable to use internet on mobile phone

[link to this post]

I am having problems using the internet on my mobile phone when connected to my home wireless network. The phone is an HTC desire and the modem is a safecom SWART2 54125. The phone connects to the wireless router with a strong signal but when my daughter is using her laptop for chatting and using the webcam (she may have a number of conversations on at the same time) I am unable to surf the web on my phone, 'page unavailable' error comes up. When shes off the laptop everthing is ok.
I have tried altering the RTS settings (set at 2346) and channel settings (now 3) but still the same problem. Are there other settings I need to change?
Modem speed is currently 448/2784kbps

What is it like even if the laptop is turned on but not being used for heavy internet access? Or if the laptop is on battery power? I suspect the laptop's power cable.

As soon as I powered up the laptop I was unable to surf the internet, then turned off power supply but still the same problem.

The Lan clients have been assigned static IP addresses ranging from 192.168.1.2 to 7 (2 my desktop pc -wired, 4 being daughters laptop and 7 is my phone, others not really used)

No just chat and webcam programs.
Getting download speeds at around 200 KB/s

If the problem happens as soon as you turn the laptop on, that suggests the laptop is really aquiring 192.168.1.7 (whether during boot up or later). Is DHCP turned off on the router?

If the laptop has wi-fi and wired network cards:
- check which are static and which one is actually .4 (they should not both be the same)
- also only one of these two network cards should be connected to your network at any given time

Assigning a static IP to a laptop's wi-fi will cause problems if it's used on a different network.
Personally I'd advise using DHCP with reservations if they need to always get the same private IP so that you can see and control all the IP allocations from the router while the laptop remains portable.

Yes DHCP is enabled in the LAN group settings and static IP address is enabled. So should I disable DHCP and then enable 'obtain an IP address automatically' or leave it as static.
Then do I need to delete the static IP addresses in the LAN clients settings? Hope this makes sense.
Then u quoted-
'Assigning a static IP to a laptop's wi-fi will cause problems if it's used on a different network.'

The laptop had been used on holiday using a mobile broadband network dongle so maybe this has affected it.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi,

Before changing anything I'd say find out what IP(s) the laptop actually uses to see if it's doing what you want.

Is it a Windows laptop (the following is for XP, Vista or 7)
If so you can save the current IP settings as a text file.

Start a Command Prompt, then type this (after the 1!):
DOS
1
ipconfig /all > %userprofile%\Desktop\ip.txt

A file called ip.txt will have been saved on the Desktop (or just ip if you don't see the file types in folders)
If you post this we'll be able to tell you if the laptop's settings will conflict with the phone.

Just to be clear, when you say static IPs, are you manually configuring your phone with a specific IP address when you join your home network (as this would mean you would have to change it by hand if using it on a different wi-fi network).

As regards the mobile broadband dongle, that should not be a factor as that shows up as its own network card when plugged rather than altering the existing network cards.

And - is there a reason why you are having to use static IPs (usually creates more work when you have several devices to keep track of)?
