Depends what you mean by "cheap", but not as expensive as I'd expected:

That certainly seems a viable solution for long runs (i.e. greater than 100m). I'd be looking for more than 100Mbps nowadays though (not that I would have a real use for that capacity).

I'm being lazy (i.e. can't find after a quick google), but how much does 500 metres of fibre cost?

I can't quickly find it either, but I think "raw" fibre optic cable is a few quid/metre.

BUT... you have to get it terminated, and each metre costs twice as much as you think because send and receive are down separate fibres.

Looks like I was wrong anyway, found this:
