Problems connecting new modem router

My ISP is Plusnet and to date I've been using the supplied BT Openreach modem and Technicolor 582n router. At times this has struggled what with thick stone walls in our house and kids getting ever more gadgets. After some research Father Christmas brought me an ASUS N55U router. However, I am struggling to get it to work. When I connect it as shown in the manual all seems OK however the DSL light continues to blink rather than going solid. I've tried contacting ASUS and they have recommended the usual advanced fix (turn it off and then on again and if that doesn't work try a hard reset using the button the back) but this has no effect. I'm pretty sure the line must be OK as when I disconnect the ASUS and put the line back into the BT modem/Technicolor router then everything works fine. Any ideas?

Is the N55U VDSL capable? It looks like it's ADSL only:

Not sure, I'll look in the book. How would I check whether my line is VDSL? I live in a small town in Somerset which is hardly the centre of the technology universe.

it can be used with the vdsl modem with latest firmware (creates an ewan port)

what does it say on the back of the bt openreach modem

The BT box says that it is an ECI Telecom box, description NGA ECI CPE Modems Type 1B and the model is B Focus V-2FUb/r Rev B. The catalogue number is ON316150. The connection port just has DSL stamped on it and the relevant light on the front is also just labelled DSL.

If so, you have a FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) service, which uses VDSL.

You need either a VDSL capable router (to replace both the Openreach Modem and Technicolor router) or retain the Openreach modem and use a router in the same manner as you use the 582n now.

Yes my Openreach box is just like that. So rather than having to get Santa to fly back from the North Pole can I connect the ASUS to the BT box using an ethernet cable? If so any advice on how to proceed setting it up would be very gratefully received.

PS - I've checked via the Plusnet site which gives a link our exchange here in Frome. It says that 20CP VN are green and it has been enabled for WBC on 21CN if that helps?

yeh you have vdsl meaning the 55u is not a one box solution

connect the ASUS instead of the plusnet supplied router..connect the ethernet cable from the openreach modem into the WAN port of the ASUS..download the manual from the ASUS website http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-N66U_B1...

setup PPPoe using your plusnet username and password....if you need more help post back again
