Can't see NAS or even the computer in explorer, windows 10

As above really, If i type in the name of the NAs in the Run box, like\\name of nas, it pops up the contents of the NAS, but it will not show under network, nor will the computer now. When i first set things up it worked fine.

I changed the netbios, but still no go.

Windows network have always been a pain.
Any ideas?

Yes, that is turned on, it looks like i may have to map it, at the end of the day it is not A large problem, but it is just strange why all of a sudden it happens, the computer can't even see itself in Network, it does see someone's sony phone, which must be next door. It also sees the NAS drive under other devices, but all that does is log me into the NAS control panel

Has Windows updated recently?

There's been an issue for a while as per your description in Windows, there was a fix that used to work but apparently the 2004 update broke that as well.

Either create a shortcut or type \\NAS box name in explorer address bar.

Random phones appearing has also been a long term problem, and you'd better hope it's not next doors or they have access to your WiFi

Go back to basics and remap your system, it won't be an update issue because you have said you don't update windows so its a mapping issue by the sound of it.

He doesn't mention not updating Windows on this thread, besides even if he doesn't update Windows, if he's installed Windows recently it will be an updated version (Run Winver to get version number) unless he has really old install media, this problem has been around for a long time.

Microsoft firewall set in public mode, or you have a third party security package (AVG, McAfee, Norton or similar) installed which has not been told what is your network and what is not.

I've got an old Synology NAS which Win 7 has been handling fine, but Win 10 can't see. There's some protocol disabled by default in Win 10.
I'm still unpicking this, you could check along this line of approach too.
Also, check your NAS OS is up-to-date too.

It is a cleanish install of Windows 10 2004, in that it is just a few days old. I only set up the NAS yesterday and all seemed well and then it vanished and so did the computer from the network.
It is back now, which is very strange, how on earth can Windows network still be so iffy?
My old NAS was fine until it went pop last week in that I could always see it.

As for the phone, yes i never thought of it having access to my Wi-fi, I thought maybe the network would just pick it up, but not give them access. But yes you are right. So another Windows network bug?


Anyway peeps, thanks for the help, seems to be ok now. i even done a test of a full backup and restore from the NAS, boy it takes ages, over an hour, but still better than remembering to plug in the USB drive for a back up and once the first full backup is done, it will just backup the changes.

Went through all of that, but ok now, seemed to have fixed itself, thanks
